The search for your Cree, Crie, Crea, Cre, Crey and Chree origins

Hello my name is Kathleen Sutton was( Cree) and my father is William Robert Cree . He is 80 years old in August and I would love to find some information for him about his family .

His father was William Lee Cree , and was married to Margaret ( was Andrews) they were married 5 July 1934 at St.Martins church in Belfast. He died in 1958 age 51 in Belfast.

My father had younger siblings Alexander(Andy) Elizabeth (Betty) Madeline and Georgie.

My father and Betty were born in India , as his father was in the army and together with Margaret they must have lived ther, the rest were born in Belfast.

My father served his apprentcship at Harland & Wolf until going into the RAF.

His birth certificate shows his grandparents as Hannah & Henry Cree.

Iam trying to trace which Cree line he is from as these names show that The William Cree they had died in 1990s.

Also if he has any siblings still alive or their children.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Kath

Hi Kathleen,

Welcome to the Cree Family History Network!

Like you, my mother was born Kathleen Cree. She is now 96. But she is not from the Northern Ireland Cree line at all, although we lived there for some years when I was a boy.

Thank you for providing all that information about your Cree ancestry. It has enabled me to identify which line you belong to. I have matched many of the people you mention with records in the Lists Section of our Cree One-Name Study website at www.cree.name/indexes/ire.htm. I have added them to the Cree Off-line Database and they will appear in the Online Database as soon as I can update it. Details of living people are not shown online to protect their privacy.

Your grandfather William Lee Cree was a son of Henry Cree and Hannah Jane McQuoid of Bangor, County Down, who were married in 1889. This agrees with your father's birth certificate. I have not located a birth entry for William Lee Cree in the Irish birth indexes, but he was aged 4 at the 1911 Census so born in 1906 or 1907. As you pointed out, the William Cree who died in the 1990s was not yours. I have corrected this in the Database.

Did William Lee Cree have any siblings? (You asked). Go to the person details of his father Henry Cree at www.cree.name/person.htm?id=7437 and you will see that there were 11 children that we know of. In fact in their 21 years of marriage up to the 1911 Census, Henry and Hannah had 12 children of whom 8 were still alive in 1911. They had another one in that year.

Click on Henry's mother Jane Cree's name to follow Henry's Cree ancestry back to Hugh Cree of Bangor. We now believe that Hugh was a son of Andrew Cree junior of Killarn/Ballyrogan. These are townlands in Newtownards parish (near the crossroads still known as Cree's Cross to locals) where Cree families had farmed for several generations. We are trying to firm up the links of several families to this line.

I have entered your Cree aunts and uncles into the Database, but they will not appear in the Online version as I must assume they are all alive unless you tell me otherwise. Georgie's birth is shown in the Births Indexes as Jane Georgie Cree.

If you have any further information about your Cree ancestors I would be pleased to add them to the Cree Database. And any stories that have been handed down, or that your father can tell you, can also be published on www.cree.name if you wish. Hopefully that would generate more interest and possible links with unknown relatives.

Many thanks for getting in touch!

Best Wishes

Hello Mike , thankyou so much for all the information, im going to investigate and see what else I can come up with .

Thankyou for correcting his fathers details , I knew it was his mother and father because of the certificate but it was confusing me with the incorrect death year , at least I can tell him about his grandparents and further back.

Hi Kathleen,

My Grandfather was Reuben Norman Frederick Cree. William Lee Cree was his Brother.

If you are on Ancestry.co.uk my tree is on it under Allan it has all the info you would be looking for. If you

are not on it i can send it to your e-mail if you want. You are on the Bangor tree line.

Hi Kathleen,

I looked through photo's and i have found one that says William Lee Cree on the back and also one of his wife. I will scan them and send them to your e-mail address. The ones on this site were sent to me by my cousin pat they are Cree's but does not say on back who they are. Maybe your dad would know who they are.
