Hello All, I have recently jointed the Cree Family History Newtwork, my gt Grandmother was Flora Stewart Cree b 1873 in Kilmarnock, she was the daughter of Robert Cree and Flora Young. I believe that this branch of the Cree family goes back to William Crie b 1574. I have been trying to find out more about my Gt Gt grandfather Robert Cree, I have yet to find his bapitsm, from the census it says he was born in either Kilmarnock or Glasgow around 1845 but to date I haven't got any further.I have just discovered that Robert Cree married for the second time after his first wife died in 1880, his second wife was Diana Brown, there were 6 children from this marriage; I am in the process of trying to find out more about these children.
I am not sure if anyone has Robert Cree in their family?

Kath,
Welcome to the Cree Family History Network. As you say it would appear that your Cree line can be traced back to William Crie who was born in approximately 1574 as part of the Burgesses of Perth line. I have undertaken some preliminary research on various births related to Robert Cree. I could not find a record of his own baptism although various other sources confirm that he was the son of David Cree and Elizabeth Climie/Clemie. However you can find all of the various Perth Burgesses branches on www.Cree.name.
A. Mike has identified Robert Cree as ID No 8418 on www.cree.name. Just put this number (8418) in page Quick Search http://www.cree.name/genealogies/index.html and hit GO.

Trevor, thank you very much for the information, like you I haven't to date been able to find a birth for Robert Cree but have just gone by the various census, maybe he was baptised at Ricarrton as this is where the family were living when the two elder children were born, I think I will try there next !
My Gt grandmother Flora Stewart Cree d/o Robert & Flora Young was married twice first to James Caldow in 1894 then to Thomas Watson Court in 1902. She had one daughter by her first marrage (my grandmother) and 7 by her second marriage, she and her husband emigrated to America in 1923 with their 3 youngest children.
Kath,
Many thanks for the further information. I guess that you may be using Ancestry for your census information and it is extremely useful. However another important website is Scotland's People (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/) which is very good for birth, marriage and death certificates. The census data is also there on Scotland's People but you have to pay for each record and therefore Ancestry is much better for that since the annual subscription covers all of the Scottish censuses. I had a look for the birth of Robert Cree on Scotland's People for all areas, including Riccarton, but could not find him. This is not so unusual since sometimes births were not registered. However we know that he was the son of David Cree and Elizabeth Climie based on the census confirmation in different years.
The Archibald Cree (Letter I above) might possibly have been the illegitimate son of James Cree, "Tailor Journeyman" and Isabella Campbell "Wool Spinner" who was born 24 July 1891 in Kilmarnock and a birth certificate exists stating these facts. I believe that this was the only Archibald Cree born in the area at the time. It could be, though not proven, that Archibald was brought up by Robert Cree and his wife Diana Brown and in the census declared as their son. Or it could be that Archibald's birth was also not recorded.

Hi Kath,
Can I add my welcome to the Cree Network to Trevor's welcome? I am the compiler of the Cree Surname web site at www.cree.name. I have now updated the Database Section of the web site to include the details of your ancestor Flora Stewart Cree. Please would you use this link - http://www.cree.name/person.htm?id=6566 to view the new information and check that it's all correct. If you would like to let me have further details such as the places where her two marriages took place, where she lived in Scotland before migrating, and where she and her second husband settled in the USA, I would be pleased to add these. Also if you have any anecdotes about her, such as family remininscences that have been passed down to you, these would help to round out her character.
This invitation is extended of course to all members of the Cree Network - find your Cree relatives in the Cree On-line Genealogy Database, check the details, send me any corrections or new information for inclusion in the Database via this Cree Family History Network web site using the Messages link in the top menu.
Best Wishes,
Mike
