Hi June,

I have only just caught up with your posting of 21 Oct 2017 on the Cree FH Network.

First can I welcome you, rather belatedly, to the Network and hope you find membership useful to your family history researches.

You seem to be quite definte that your "great grandfather James Cree was the son of John Cree and Hannah Warren." Do you have firm evidence that this was the same James Cree?

There were definitely two people called James Cree of about the same age in Nottinghamshire but from different, though related, branches which had been settled for a time about 15 miles apart, in Mansfield and Worksop respectively

The first James Cree was baptised on 29 Apr 1842 in Mansfield, a son of John Cree and Hannah Warren. He and his sister Jane Warren Cree (the later Mormon) are shown in the 1851 Census at Quarry Hill, Mansfield, when James was eight years old. Their father John Cree was shown as a cotton preparer. He did not appear in the 1861 Census nor in the immigration records when his sister and parents migrated to the USA. His family had been in Mansfield since 1834 having moved there from Edingley.

The other James Cree was born in about February 1843 in Worksop, a son of Henry Cree. His life in Worksop is well documented (see http://cree.one-name.net/person.htm?id=309). He was a butcher and greengrocer in 1869 and a fishmonger in 1881 and 1892. (His brother William was also a fishmonger in 1881.) Their family line had been in Worksop since their great-grandparents, William Cree and Sarah Woodhead had moved there in 1790.

The two families living in Mansfield and Worksop had therefore had no recent conection to each other. Their common ancestors were William Cree and Sarah Woodhead who were originally from Clowne, Derbyshire.

It therefore seems highly likely that James Cree who married Julia Marples in 1870 was of the Worksop branch of this Cree line and that his father was Henry Cree of Worksop.

I hope you find food for thought in this and would be interested to learn your reaction to it.

Best Wishes,

Mike Spathaky
