The search for your Cree, Crie, Crea, Cre, Crey and Chree origins

I am looking for any information I can find on Jane Cree, my great grandmother. She was a mormon pioneer and lived in Utah around 1850. She married a man named David Hickman. She was the mother of Ada John, my maternal grandmother that died shortly after my mother was born so I never knew her. My mother was Maurine Hickman who was born in Ogden, Utah in 1917.

Hi Russell,

I cannot add much to what Trevor has already said. The link to the personal details page for Jane Warren Cree is http://www.cree.name/person.htm?id=275

Best Wishes, Mike Spathaky

Russell,

I believe that your ancestor Jane Cree actually married a David John rather than a David Hickman. I undertook a search in www.familysearch.org where it would appear that your maternal grandmother was actually Ada John. Mike Spathaky has included this family in Cree.name (www.cree.name) under Line 1: The Derbyshire-Nottinghamshire Line which starts with the marriage of Alexander Mackree to Anna Hancocke on the 11 July 1643. However all of their descendants were named Cree. I may be wrong but I think that this is the case and Mike will be able to clarify the situation. I have copied parts below of the Cree.name entry. It would therefore appear that we can trace your Jane Cree back to 1643.

The children of Jane Cree and David John would appear to be:

Thomas John (1868-1910)

Emma John Knudson John (1872-1941)

Ada John (1874-1929)

Alban Harris John (1875-1952)

John Cree was baptised on 2 October 1808 in Southwell Minster, Southwell, Nottinghamshire.1 He was the son of John Cree and Jane Taylor

His daughter Matilda Cree was born between 1829 and 1830.

John Cree married Hannah Warren, daughter of Richard Warren and Elizabeth Lewis, on 25 December 1831 in Church of St Giles, Edingley, Nottinghamshire.2,3

His daughter Ann Cree was baptised on 5 February 1832 in Edingley, Nottinghamshire. John Cree and Hannah Warren appeared on the census on 7 June 1841 in Rock Valley, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. John was a cotton doubler. A Warren family were next door.4

His daughter Ann Cree died on 1 July 1841 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.5

His daughter Jane Warren Cree was baptised on 19 January 1845 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. John Cree and Hannah Warren appeared on the census on 30 March 1851 in Quarry Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. He was a cotton preparer.6

His mother Jane Taylor died c November 1851 in Mansfield+, Nottinghamshire.7

On 7 April 1861 John Cree and Hannah Warren were living in Quarry Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, along with John Cree. "John Cree Junr" aged 52 was an overlooker doubling cotton.8 John Cree died c 1864 in Pennsylvania?, USA.9

Children of John Cree and Hannah Warren

In April 1927 Jane Warren Cree was living in 26 E 17th Street, Garfield, Utah.5 She died on 23 April 1927 in Garfield, Utah, USA. The cause of death was "cerebral haemorrhage." She was a widow..5
