The search for your Cree, Crie, Crea, Cre, Crey and Chree origins

Good evening

Many thanks for accepting me to this group, which I came across whilst researching our Cree ancestors and came across the booklet (PDF) Cree families of Fife and Devon, which the first edition was written by our Great Uncle Hill Gerald Hillary Cree).

From the booklet Our line starts with William Cree of Kettlehill, Fife and his 3rd son John.                  This line includes Edward Hodges Cree who was the wrote the journals of his time as a Naval Surgeon, which were made into the book "The Cree Journals".

We have several of his original paintings as well as a sketch book with many more.

Kindest regards

Stu Wainwright

Stu,

Again, welcome to the Network for those with an interest in Cree family history. Gerald Hillary Cree certainly undertook a great deal of research into his Cree family history and although I did not meet him myself Mike (Spathaky) did. Because Gerald's eyesight had deteriorated Mike helped him prepare the booklet that you mention. 'The Cree Journals' is certainly a wonderful record of the life, travels and paintings of Edward Hodges Cree. The fact that you still have several of his original paintings and sketch book is marvellous for your family and no doubt they are treasured.

As you probably know Branch 10c - The Fife and Devon Branch is recorded in detail at http://www.cree.name/genealogies/charts.htm and within that you will find Edward Hodges Cree. I believe that Gerald's original booklet has been built upon in the family tree and mistakes have been corrected and additions made. You can therefore compare the booklet against the information in Branch 10c.

At some stage in each individual's family history search the 'paper trail' ends or a particular link that is needed to conclusively connect one Cree family to another is lost. That is where family history DNA testing can be used to see if the male individuals in different Cree lines are directly related one to another. I undertook the simple DNA test many years ago and I am part of the Newtownards Line (Line 17) that is directly related to your own Cree line Branch 10c. Therefore at some time in the past we have the same male Cree ancestor located most probably in very close proximity to Perth.

Cree Y-DNA Project Analysis

'A firm conclusion can now be drawn that the County Down Cree line of Robert Cree of Newtownards (Line 17); the Sprotbrough, Yorkshire, Cree line (Line 14); the Aberdalgie line (Branch 10b), the Fife and Devon branch (now Branch 10c) and the Lisburn weavers line (Line 23b) have been shown to be closely related.'

As you can see a number of previously distinct Cree lines were proven to be connected by DNA. Hopefully I have attached the actual DNA results that proved the connection. Small marker differences are due to occasional changes that take place in DNA over time. If you would like to post any photos or information please feel free to do so. I hope that this has been helpful,

Trevor.
