I thought we had such a small family but in actual fact , it is huge1 My Great great grandfather was Edward Hodges Cree, Great Grandfather Herbert Eustace Cree and my Grandfather John Cree and my great aunts Nancy and Doris Cree. My family often stayed with Hilary ( Gerald Hillary Cree) and his wife Joan)in Devon when I was little. When I was older, I have memories of rescuing lambs and Joan looking after them in her kitchen! A bit of a story......My grandfather died when my Mum was only 7 years old so sadly I never knew him but Hilary and Joan and my great aunt Doris, as a result. were important to me.

When Hilary was writing the Cree Journals, my parents provided him with some of Edward Hodges' diaries and we have some special paintings and other treasured possessions - his quill, compass, graduation certificate from Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh.

I would love to hear from any relatives - close or distant, near or far. We now live in New Zealand and moved from Edinburgh 15 years ago where I was studying to be a Veterinary Surgeon ( not a human one like my grandfathers!).

All the best and many thanks for accepting me onto the network .

Attached is a link to a report by Gerald Hillary Cree (CreeID#2680). This report outlines, but is not limited to, the descendants of William Cree, of Kettlehill, Fife and wife Margaret (Dall) Cree.

The Cree Families of Fife and Devon, by G. H. Cree

On page 22 there is a family tree diagram. At the top is my 5th great grandfather William Cree. My place in the diagram would branch off of my father (John David Cree) which is listed as the "3 Children" after "Hugh v Texas = ?". Hugh, or Charles, was married to Carolyn Cree. Their three children are as follows:

- John D. Cree (My father) married Yolanda Soto: John Christopher Cameron Cree (son) Yolanda Durann Cree (daughter)

- Dianne Cree (Twin sister to John D. Cree)

-Greame H. Cree. married Marry Cree: David Cree (son)

Hugh or Charles Cree (CreeID#2695) is my sister (Durann Cree) and my grandfather. He sadly passed away in 2008 and we miss him. His Navy photo is below.

Some remarkable stories have been recorded in the time-space between William and Margaret Cree to myself. I was proud to find out about how we are tied to the American West and how we were in large part responsible for the bringing of the Aberdeen Angus Bulls from Scotland to New Mexico. The full story can be read at the below link:

A Cree Story - The Angus V V Ranch

I feel that I've only skimmed the surface of my heritage and just a few days worth of browsing the web I've found that there is a truly overwhelming amount of information to go through regarding the Cree name. I feel most fortunate to be able to read about my direct past and daydream about the history. At any rate, I wanted to introduce myself and express my excitement! I hope to be able to contribute more in the future.

Sincerely

Thank you for accepting me into your website.
I believe I am related back to Alexander Cree born 28.05.1699 in Methven. I also have links through Ancestry, not sure how accurate they are, back to a Robert Crie born 1618 possibly in Fife.
I shall attempt to post the direct lineage I have to Alexander in the coming days.
Thanks again and keep up the good work on an excellent website :-)

My great grandmother was Eliza Cree (1870-1955) - the first child of George and Jane. She married John Douglas Jamison who became the Engineer at Whitla Street Fire Station until his death in1924.

My father told me about visiting George Cree in the 1920's when my father was a boy. He recalled that George worked as a ground keeper for the wealthy McCance family who lived at Larkfield House. He told me that George lived in a picturesque whitewashed cottage at the foot of Black Mountain, where he kept a few pigs and grew vegetables and potatoes.

I have a picture of George and will try to upload it to the site.

I am trying to find documentation on Robert Cree, Jr., Elizabeth Villars Cree, John Cree, and Elias E. Cree. I spoke with an individual with the Harrison County Ohio Historical Society who told me she worked with a fellow named named in the society. She told me he had passed but said a family bible existed. Would anyone be able to assist and is anyone related though this line of Crees?
Thank you all,

The surname Cree is very rare and it is the only entry found in any Co. Monaghan parish.

I thought someone out there might be interested in this entry.

Hello Trevor and everyone (waves)

I have been intending to join for quite some time but it was one of those things that kept getting lost in the general million jobs per day that is real life. I descend from the Bolsover Cree line which I discovered whilst researching my Cuttell, Hallam, Drabble ancestry. James Cree the son of James Cree and Elinor Edson married Elizabeth Whitehead 24th Nov 1709 in Bolsover, Derbyshire, England and their daughter Mary Cree, (1716-1777) married John Drabble in Sutton-cum-Duckmanton, Derbyshire, 19th May 1741.

I have been a family historian and writer since my mid-teens. I don’t if it of useful info for anyone but I don’t think that Alexander would have called himself Mac Cree. One thing I have found is that officials and the more petty the more petty if you follow, would never admit to “not quite catching what was said” and would therefore guess rather than admit they didn’t know. This was especially an issue if the person speaking to the person writing it down had a strong regional accent or even a dialect. I have come across a couple of clerics who changed the name of my Irish relatives from Dougal Connaught to Douglas O’Connor because they only managed to catch “Dou…” and “Con…”

As a patriotic Scotsman if Alexander’s own surname had been MacCree he would have made sure his only known surviving son was James McCree, but the rapid loss of the name back to Cree suggests to me that Alexander was given the label MacCree arbitrarily to signify he was a Scot as all Scots are “Mac” and he probably either never knew or simply ignored it. Given the traditional naming pattern of Scots families, it is 99% certain that his firstborn son (James, b.April1644) was named after his own father, so Alexander Cree was the son of a James Crie or Cree.

At this time I am focussing on Mary Cree’s mother, Elinor Edson. I am researching and writing the biography of John Thomas “JT” Edson, the western/adventure writer. By the 1980s he had sold 17 million copies of his books in 11 countries, and by 2000 this was 57 million copies. JT seems to descend from Elinor Edson’s father Thomas via her brother John Edson or Eadson and the biography needs to be ready for publication in 2018, to tie in with 90 years since JT was born. Unfortunately I already have one setback – in an attempt to achieve 2 goals in one, I decided to use the work on the biography as I am already doing it with towards a qualification in Genealogy via the University of Strathclyde – this coming first year will require £4000. I was refused grants in Scotland because I live in England and refused grants in England because the university is in Scotland. Yes indeed, this is the reality behind the political nonsense of creating “educational equality across class divisions.” Of course the knock on effect is that now I am having to seek donations/sponsorship my research budget has had to be diverted to pay towards course costs. This is all taking up time I could be spending on research and information, and of course anything I find that is relevant towards the Cree line that Elinor married into will be submitted here for adding on to the general knowledge base.

However, I am Scottish on my father’s side (Stewart, Paterson, Robb, McBirnie, etc) and if there is any Scots specific questions anyone wants to ask, feel free. I also have my brother’s Stewart DNA lodged with FtDNA in the USA for their Stewart surname project, and if there is not already one underway, I would strongly urge all male CREE to use FtDNA to set up a similar Surname research project – it will decisively answer whether all Cree, Crie, Cre, etc are the descendants of one or a small number of already related men who lived near Crieff, Perth, as seems to be the case. It is also a long-term project and an “always active one” – you only have to donate a cheek rub sample once, anyone can do it (I have had relatives in their mid-90s do so) and comparisons to fresh donations are always running 24/7. My other claim to fame (if any) is that my grandfather's first cousin was Eliza "Cis" Paterson, alias Pat Paterson, the Hollywood actress who married Charles Boyer (two time Oscar winner). If you ever watch the 1930 Warner Oland Charlie Chan in Egypt, Pat is Carole, the blonde haired heroine imperiled by the nefarious baddie disguising himself as an Egyptian mummy back to wreak havoc courtesy of the Pharaoh's curse. She got billing above Rita Hayworth!
Looking for old photos of the William and Jane Cree House in Jefferson PAtag:creefhs.ning.com,2014-08-21:6495740:BlogPost:56662014-08-21T23:16:51.000ZGill Sanchezhttps://creefhs.ning.com/profile/GillSanchez

I notice that there is no death date on Line 23b for Jane Cree. She died on 26 September 1918 and is buried in the same grave as her husband George (1851-1932) and her son Arthur (1891-1914) in Belfast City Cemetery - Grave No J1 167.

Jane's age at death was given as 65 which would give her a birth date around 1853.

Their last address is given as Suffolk, Dunmurry, Belfast.

Over the last few years significant progress has been made in helping individuals trace their own Cree ancestry and the Cree.name website must be one of the most comprehensive family history resources in existence. The male Cree who have undertaken the DNA test have allowed us to prove that many previously unconnected Cree lines are indeed directly related and many now have proven origins in close proximity to Perth in Scotland in the early 1600s and indeed earlier. The origin of other lines have yet to be determined but we hope that 2014 will be a very significant year for all of those with an interest in their Cree family origins.
Hi Leonard,

We have recently had to suspend a very new member of the Cree Family History Network because it would appear that they may have been involved in Spamming other members. If you received any unwanted messages our apologies. Hopefully it was contained before too many members were contacted (10th July 2013). I believe that you will not be contacted again by that person since their membership has now been blocked. We try to be very careful when vetting new applications,

This will hopefully give a further boost to the construction of family trees which Trevor Cee, Adam Trevor Cree, Leonard Cree and others are actively engaged in at the moment. It was good to meet both Leonard and Adam while I was in Ireland, We had some good discussions and both agreed to take the Genealogy DNA test to see if we can link their Northern Ireland ancestry to other lines, whether in County Down, the USA or Scotland. We all await the results with interest.
MARY CREE.1877tag:creefhs.ning.com,2013-05-17:6495740:BlogPost:42772013-05-17T01:12:56.000ZLEONARD CREEhttps://creefhs.ning.com/profile/LEONARDCREE
