Seeking clarity and help if possible. So my mothers maiden name is Cree from Lisburn. I had started looking into my family tree. I stumbled upon Samuel Raymond Cree, play writer from Lisburn. My Uncle is not quite sure if Samuel Raymond Cree is my Grandfathers 1st or 2nd cousin. He had stated that he had been sent a photograph to which he has recently found. The photograph would be my mothers and uncles Great Great Grandparents - on the back it says William and Mary Cree. I am really keen on finding out a lot more, on the forum I have seen a trail that goes way back to William Cree (Farmer) Lisburn and links back through Scotland. My uncle has stated there had been talks when they were younger of family origins in Scotland. I have been on ancestry.com and recently completed the dna test, just awaiting back the results to obtain both my Mothers and Fathers family history. Doing the research myself has been exciting but I am missing a few links and would love to confirm all by seeing pictures and visiting gravesides out of respect. I would love to see how they lived, what they did and how they pushed through this world to be where we are today. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Surnames I know that is linked also would be Gillespie and Dodds. if you would like to see the picture of William and Mary Cree please feel free to ask. After all they could be a picture no one has seen before or a piece to their puzzle that could finally be completed.

Hi everyone,

I am the daughter of Sheila Mary Cree who is the daughter of William Selby Cree and Rosaline Pearl Whipp formerly of Taralga NSW Australia. I have noticed she is not listed as their child on the Cree One-Name Study site. She was born on 4th September 1939 and is the only remaining child still alive today.

Is it possible to add her to the family information please? I would love to hear from anyone who may know of the Crees of Taralga.

Thank you :)

I recently joined this group and it is fascinating. My mother was Florence Cree who was the only child of John and Mary (Minnie) Cree from Lisburn. I am trying to trace back as far as I can. John's parents were Susannah and Henry and Henry's parents were George and Jane who appear to be second cousins. I would welcome any further suggestions and happy to help with details of who I have traced so far. Diane x

Dan,

I'm not sure if the origin of the Sprotbrough Cree line has been discussed before on the Network but I have just noticed your very interesting posting below. Mike is probably the expert on the Sprotbrough Cree line but we had a very interesting meeting one or two years ago with descendants of the original William Cree.
It was at one time thought that William Cree (1713-1750) might not be the father of his son William Cree (1749 - 1838) because of William's rapid rise in society. However, through DNA family history testing, we now know that a direct Cree descendant of William Cree (1749 - 1838) is directly related to a number of Cree males DNA who can be traced back on paper back to Scotland in the 1600s.

1. If you look at the photo section of the Cree Family History Network you should find some photographs of the Sprotbrough Cree meeting that we held close to the old Cree family home in Surrey.

2. The Cree necklace and other old Cree photos would certainly be of great interest to all Cree members and particularly to members originating from the Sprotbrough Cree line. If they could be posted that would be great.

3. Truth or Fact?

(a) A line of the Cree family did have a connection with Creetown and the River Cree in Scotland but it was indirect. It is not believed that the Cree family descended from a Spanish sailor although we are always happy to be proved wrong should evidence appear in the future. The connection with Creetown is due to the fact that the son of Christian Cree (1718-1795) and William Stewart (1710-1786), namely Robert Stewart of Castle Stewart and St Fort (1743-1801), was for a relatively short time the owner of a ruined castle (Castle Stewart) and land on the River Cree close to Creetown. However in his lifetime he sold the lands at Castle Stewart.

I hope that this helps clarify a few issues,

I have birth records of above children all stating their Grandmother is named Catherine not Jane.

At Samuel Cree's birth son of Hugh Cree and Eliza Majorie the informant is Jane Wallace stating her to be his Aunt. This is Jane Cree sister of Hugh Cree and she is married to John Wallace.

As you can see Hugh Cree is married to Catherine and his sister Jane Cree is married to John Wallace.

I have in my possession his baptism Certificate from St. Comgalls Church of Ireland showing his baptism date as 8th July 1883 and his name is Robert George on the certificate. On his marriage certificate dated 5 May 1903 both he and my grandmother stretched the truth according to my mother and even on his death certificate of which I have a certified copy my mother was not sure of his age and now we know it should have been 49 and not 48 he was only a few days short of being 50 years old when he passed away and my Grandmother was born 19 February and my mother would say they were both born the same month and year.

As for this other George I am thinking we are dealing with the same person unless you have other information. I have come across these errors myself and thought I would bring this to your attention.

I also have information about the child born without a name in 1864 and have found Margaret Cree born 1864 to Eliza and Hugh. info in St. Comgalls Church, MIC/583/19 Baptisms. Birth certificate has Mary Anne McJury as informant. Baptism 10 April 1864 and Birth as 7 Mar 1864.

also Listed in FHL film # 101080 as female birth. Page 717 Line 37. the child in your information has been listed as a son to Hugh and Eliza if you have a month date for this child it would have to be Dec 1864 allowing 9 months for this boy to have been born so I am almost sure this first child of Hugh's is a girl.

Hope you can figure all this out and contact me if there is any questions.

Sincerely Dorothy
