Cree Family to Canada

My great grandfather Andrew Cree immigrated to Canada from Scotland in about 1850. Upon leaving Liverpool they traveled to Quebec city where they were processed and boarded a new boat...a steamer called The Montreal for the short trip down the St Lawrence to Montreal where they would all go their own ways. About 12 miles outside Montreal, the boiler set fire to the woodwork around it and the ship caught fire. People were jumping and swimming for shore taking with them anything they could. Everything they had for the new world was with them so I can imagine how desperate they were to take as much as they can. With the clothing the women were wearing, getting wet and swimming was more difficult as the weight of the clothing weighed them down. My great grandfather was one of about 100 who survived. There had been 500-600 people on board at the time.

When I found this story what struck me was how many people would have never been born had he not survived. He went on to the Toronto area where he married and had a family... they had family and so on. I am truly humbled by the sacrifice and bravery of my great grandfather in coming to this country when it was so new to Euroeans.
